The purpose of the Mali Project is to demonstrate application of macro and micro-sociology analysis in completion of cross-cultural comparison within the context of daily family life in Mali and the United States.
The conceptual framework CO + SC = Adaptation provides the structure for the analysis used this semester in preparation for the completion of the written report due at the last class meeting of the semester.
Preparation (completed in class):
Macro – 1) Analysis of the structure of the Ladji Malle family presented in “A Day In Kombre.”
2) Analysis of the comparative demographics of Mali and the United States.
Micro – 1) Analysis of the daily activities of the various members of the Malle Family.
2) Preparation of a chart of your average daily activities.
1) Using the information gathered in your preparation, complete the Venn Diagram
including differences and similarities of the two countries. You may use macro and
micro analysis to reach your conclusions. For example, from a macro perspective, what
demographic information indicates differences in the “structural conditions” of each
country, such as access to health care. From a micro perspective, what beliefs, values,
attitudes, and norms are apparent from the daily activities. An example is the value of
education for males and females in each country.
2) Essay – The purpose of the essay is to document your understanding of the
differences in the two countries from the macro and micro perspectives. You may choose
to structure your response using the CO + SC = Adaptation conceptual framework.
You should include observations and conclusions reached individually and/or within
your group discussions. Include differences in “structural conditions” and “cultural
orientations” supported with examples.
The concluding section should be a summary of how “structural conditions” contribute to
differences in “cultural orientation” of the two countries, and what you have learned from
the project. How has this project affected the way you think/feel about cross-cultural
differences in the world?
