Rationale:

Visual impressions can create a wide variety of emotions.  A crowded market place, a wilderness scene, a fatal accident… Writers, poets and artists often use visual impressions to stimulate and produce their work.  The aim of this activity is for participants to write a poem using only the photographs appearing in the book.  This will heighten awareness of different families and living conditions.

Prerequisite:

Knowledge of poetic writing styles

Examples of « impression » poems*

Method:

The educator will read examples of « impression » poems and discuss with the group the themes and images they present.  He/she will then show the group ten  photographs from the book and ask the participants to write down five or more words to describe the way people in the photographs are dressed.

Participants will link the words with phrases to form a poem, using a poetic style of their liking

Poems will be presented to the group and later organized into a book of poems.
